What is included

The honest cost per use takes the price and grows it at your return assumption over the piece’s life (money in a coat missed the market), adds each year’s upkeep grown the same way, subtracts the resale value at the end — and divides by realistic total uses. The naïve figure — price divided by uses — is shown beside it, because that’s the one printed on the shopping-justification napkin.

What is estimated or left out

Per-use arithmetic suits things bought to be used; heirlooms, gifts, and pure-joy purchases answer to a different desk entirely. The formula also can’t see quality differences except through the years you give it — a doubled price with tripled service life is a bargain, and this page will say so only if you tell it the years honestly. Rental comparisons vary wildly by category; bring your real local price.

Common questions

How do I calculate cost per wear?
The honest version: purchase price grown at your investment return over the garment’s life, plus upkeep, minus realistic resale — divided by wears you’ll actually log. A $300 coat worn 40 times a year for 5 years lands near $2 a wear honestly counted; the same coat worn 8 times a year is $10–12. Same coat, different honesty.
What’s a good cost per use?
Compare it with the alternative, not a universal number: the rental price, the taxi fare, the café espresso. An espresso machine at $0.60 a cup beats the café at any income; a $200-per-wear gown loses to rental unless the occasions are priceless — which is allowed, once it’s admitted out loud.
Doesn’t cost per wear just justify expensive things?
It’s a fine tool and a famous excuse; the difference is one input. The formula rewards things genuinely used often and long — good boots, the everyday bag, the daily-driver tool — and exposes aspirational purchases the moment realistic use replaces planned use in the denominator.
